Are you working in Sustainability without knowing it? We were!

Carol Ord is Sustainability Manager at Lowell

ESG, or Sustainability, are without doubt the buzz words of the moment, but what do they mean?

Whichever term you use, most people think first of the environment - the E - ways to save the planet and slow the effects of climate change.  It’s an important part of it - one that must be recognised, understood and addressed - but perhaps it’s the ‘Social’ and ‘Governance’ aspects where we can have the biggest influence and impact in our industry.

Neither topic (Social or Governance) is new to Financial Services.  Running your business in the right way to ensure fair customer treatment is inherent in the FCA regulation and a prominent feature on most company websites – alongside ongoing commitments to partner effectively with clients and to invest in our people.

And that’s really the key message of the Sustainability & ESG slot at the CSA's UK Credit & Collections Conference (UKCCC) – Sustainability & ESG may be relatively new terms for some, but the concept is likely well-embedded within your organisation already and something you’ve been working on for a long-time, without necessarily knowing it.  What is changing, is the need for greater data gathering, disclosure and an awareness of how future regulation and reporting requirements may impact your business in the future.

Here’s what you can expect from our session:

We recognise that companies are all at different stages of their sustainability journey – so we want to dedicate most of the session to answering your questions in a panel debate.
You’ll hear from:

  • Hayley Baines-Buffery from BRODIE, the specialist sustainability consultancy that Lowell partnered with to bring independent expertise to our work on sustainability.
  • Paul Woods, who has been leading Arrow Global’s Sustainability & ESG progress in a dedicated leadership role since January 2021, having previously headed up Arrow’s Group Enterprise and Operational Risk function.
  • And me, Carol Ord. I’ve led on Lowell’s sustainability work since March 2021, having spent 12 years at Lowell focused on a number of topics that now fall under the ‘Social’ banner of our sustainability strategy - including colleague communications, colleague development, customer experience and corporate affairs.

Together we’ll introduce the concept of ESG and how its evolved. And we’ll share some of our own experiences as we’ve worked to continue to develop our companies’ respective approaches to sustainability – looking at what we’ve delivered so far and touching on our future plans.

It’s sure to be an interesting discussion - we hope to see you there!
