Transferring Apprenticeship Levy funds

Businesses are able to receive a Levy transfer from another business to fund an apprenticeship, or alternatively transfer their unused Apprenticeship Levy funds to another business.

How to access unused levy funds

CSA Member Testimonial Phillips & Cohen Associates Ltd (PCA) is a CSA Member and they have used the shared levy option to access large corporations' unused levy pots. Chris Norcup-Stone, Director of HR at PCA, explains a bit more about the process:

Apprenticeships are a valuable option to bring new talent into the business and a cost-effective way to develop and upskill your existing people. Transferring levy funds is a great way to help fellow businesses and close the skills gap in your local area and sector. After two years any surplus levy funds are forfeited to the government.

There are two ways to access unused levy funds: by reaching out to friendly clients, suppliers and local businesses, or by creating public pledges/searching for available funds from transferring employers. How to use the Government Manage Apprenticeships site:

1. Link to a friendly employer. Search under ‘Finances’ and click ‘Transfers’. You’ll see an estimated financial snapshot for your levy pot, from here you can connect to a receiving employer, when approved they will be listed and you can attach apprentices as a cohort for their approval. Transfer requests you are sending or receiving are listed here too.

2. Create public transfers pledges or apply for transfer opportunities. Search under ‘Finances’, click ‘Your transfers’. You’ll see the estimated financial snapshot for your Levy pot, from here you can set up public transfer pledges and specify sectors and location in the UK. Each request will come to you for review and approval. Alternatively, you can search through the businesses offering pledges and apply for funding. This will be for a specific number of apprentices and course, and you can make multiple applications. If approved, you can then attach your apprentices and funding is made by the other employer – not you.
